Electricity Consumption

Using the $ value of your bill is potentially inaccurate as providers supply different rates, fixed service rates, and peak versus off-peak rates.

The best method to calculating your electricity emission is using your consumption (kWh).

If you're not aware of your kWh consumption, your state's average per person is:

  • NSW & ACT - 3,304 kWh per year
  • Vic - 2,662 kWh per year
  • Qld - 3,159 kWh per year
  • WA - 2,304 kWh per year
  • SA - 3,134 kWh per year
  • Tas - 5,125 kWh per year
  • NT - 2,245 kWh per year

Gas Consumption

As with electricity, the best method to calculating your gas emission is using your consumption (MJ).

If you're not aware of your MJ consumption, your state's average per person is:

  • NSW & ACT - 3,040 MJ per year
  • Vic - 18,890 MJ per year
  • Qld - 630 MJ per year
  • WA - 4,470 MJ per year
  • SA - 6,730 MJ per year
  • Tas - 0 MJ per year
  • NT - 50 MJ per year

LPG Consumption

LPG can be purchased in two methods - Megajoules (MJ) or Litres (L)

Our calculators work on the 'L' method, however if you purchase by the 'MJ', simply divide your total by 26.2 to convert it to 'L'.

If you're not aware of your 'L' consumption, your state's average per person is:

  • NSW & ACT - 14.5 L per year
  • Vic - 15.6 L per year
  • Qld - 22.9 L per year
  • WA - 28.6 L per year
  • SA - 44.7 L per year
  • Tas - 22.4 L per year

Wood Consumption

The best method to calculating your wood emission is using your consumption (tonnes).

If you're not aware of your wood consumption, your state's average per person is

  • NSW & ACT - 0.112 tonnes per year
  • Vic - 0.273 tonnes per year
  • Qld - 0.098 tonnes per year
  • WA - 0.160 tonnes per year
  • SA - 0.233 tonnes per year
  • Tas - 1.127 tonnes per year
  • NT - 0.017 tonnes per year

BUSINESS PREMISES

Calculations based on the $ value of your bills is a good idea in principle, but unfortunately it is very difficult to determine your usage from your bills now that competitive energy markets exist.

The reason why is that each retailer can choose to sell under its own pricing structure, which they can keep confidential. Recently the Tasmanian regulator tried to compare Tasmanian electricity prices against other states and ended up with some large discrepancies.

In addition to this, every retailer offers different tariff structures and therefore we cannot determine if the household is using off-peak electricity (which is much cheaper per unit). In particular, different energy suppliers charge different fixed charges � eg some Victorian retailers charge $160/year fixed charged while in NSW it�s more like $80.

Our business calculator offers you two options for estimating your energy-related greenhouse gas emissions.

Simple Option

The basic approach requires you to input what state your business is located and the number of employees.

Using the state level averages for energy use and state greenhouse factors for fuels, the formula to estimate your carbon emissions takes into consideration the stand-by and running emissions of your equipment, and the state variable carbon emission coefficient per person.

We have also included the carbon emission factor in regard to personal waste. The calculation is based on the average municipal solid waste figure for carbon emissions per person multiplied by the number of employees in your business.

This simple option is based on state averages, however we know that not every business is average! The detailed method allows you to customise the calculation to your business� consumption.

Detailed Option

The best and most accurate method to customise your calculations is based on your business usage of energy over the past year. By entering the figure that you consumed (eg. kWh for electricity, MJ for gas, L for LPG and tonnes for wood), the emission calculation will be more candid and accurate for you. This is on your energy bills, but if you can’t find them, ring your energy retailer: they should be able to give you this information.

We’ve used greenhouse coefficients from the Australian Greenhouse Office Factors and Methods Workbook 2006 to convert the energy use information into greenhouse gas emissions. We use these coefficients on a state-by-state basis so to help you make a more accurate calculation, for example Tasmania have a minimal carbon emission in comparison to mainland Australia with regard to electricity however have significant emissions in comparison with regard to wood and LPG.

With regard to wood, our calculations are based on the assumption that it is sourced sustainably and burnt efficiently in a wood heater.

In this option, if you are buying Green Power or Green Gas, we give you the option to tell us what proportion of your usage is from an accredited green source, because you won’t have to offset that part of your energy use – it’s already zero emission!
