Greening Australia’s biodiverse carbon offsets - explanatory note
The Federal Government is committed to introducing a national emissions trading scheme by 2010. Under this scheme large direct emitters of greenhouse gases are likely to incur a liability and be required to reduce their emissions. This will create a market demand for carbon offsets. This will be known as the “compliance market”. Greening Australia’s biodiverse carbon offsets are one mechanism to achieve reductions. Greening Australia has created a corporate product offering of biodiverse carbon offsets designed to cater to this new market.
In addition to this new compliance market, the existing voluntary market is likely to continue to attract households and small to medium sized companies not covered by the emissions trading scheme. The voluntary market and Greening Australia’s voluntary biodiverse carbon offset product caters for households and smaller companies that voluntarily choose to reduce their emissions in spite of having no legal requirement to do so.

Greening Australia will guarantee the offsetting of the stipulated tonnage of carbon as part of our Transforming Our Landscapes initiatives (http://www.greeningaustralia.org.au/) whereby the aggregation of a large number of household and small to medium business voluntary carbon offset commitments will be used to restore large areas of biodiverse native vegetation.
These biodiverse carbon plantings will be fully accredited under the Federal Government’s Greenhouse Friendly program which guarantees the maintenance of the carbon sink for at least 100 years. Greening Australia further guarantees that the stipulated tonnage of carbon will be sequestered over a 20 year period. Greening Australia will also register each tonne of carbon created under this programme with an approved carbon registry and will retire each tonne on behalf of the customer, thus ensuring this reduction of carbon is added to the Federal Government’s national carbon balance sheet as a reduction.
Greening Australia’s compliance biodiverse carbon offsets product – Large corporations captured under the Australian Emissions Trading Scheme
Greening Australia will guarantee the supply of a stipulated annual tonnage (annual vintages) of carbon to our corporate clients within the context of long term contracts. Greening Australia will establish and manage the carbon sink on behalf of our corporate customers. All the carbon offsets produced will be fully accredited under the Federal Government’s Greenhouse Friendly program which guarantees the maintenance of the carbon sink for at least 100 years as well as a rigorous long-term risk management strategy. Further Greening Australia will ensure that the carbon produced will be registered with an approved carbon registry which will enable the banking, trading and retirement of the carbon offsets consistent with the rules and regulations established to facilitate the Australian Emissions Trading Scheme.
